The top 30
Analyzing the Data of the Top 10
It should be no surprise that the largest namespace, that is not a Top Level Domain (TLD), is operated by Amazon. Domaindiscovery.uk has to date observed an incredible 67.7 million subdomains for amazonaws.com.
The second, third and fourth spots go to large ISPs and telecom providers that all have significant numbers of domains in their reverse DNS namespace. These domains are comcast.net (46 million subdomains) operated by Comcast Corporation, bbtec.net (39 million subdomains) operated by SoftBank Corp and sbcglobal.net (31 million subdomains) operated by AT&T Services, Inc.
The fifth position goes to a cloud provider namespace: cloudshell.dev, with over 30 million observed subdomains. This namespace is operated by Charleston Road Registry, Inc. which is a Google Inc. company used to operate Google’s new top level domain portfolio and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Sixth place goes to myvzw.com, a cloud-related namespace owned by Verizon Trademark Services LLC and which has over 30 million observed subdomains.
Hot on its heels in seventh place is plex.direct, which is a global streaming media service and a client–server media player platform operated by Plex GmbH.
The eighth and ninth places go to two more large ISP and telecom providers: Charter Communications Operating LLC’s rr.com and Deutsche Telekom AG’s t-ipconnect.de.
Finally, at number ten in the list, we find Microsoft Corporation with its azure.com domain name, which is used for its cloud services. We observed just under 24 million subdomains, and so while it’s still massive, it’s almost three times smaller than Amazon’s competing cloud service.
